Both Kate and I had our first experiences with salt water in the Mediterranean Sea. I in Croatia near Šibenik on Murter and Kate in Greece on the island of Lefkada. Even though we especially love tropical seas and oceans, we still have great memories of the Mediterranean Sea. Especially because we once had a fantastic holiday and first diving on the island of Gozo without a travel agency. we later repeated these great experiences and added dives to the wonderful scuba diving on the island of Gozo.
This Mediterranean Gozo diving trip, along with our next vacation in the Philippines, was one of our biggest diving adventures for a very low price. The incredibly intense and wonderful experiences we had together in the Mediterranean convinced us that it is not always necessary to go to a tropical sea. Moreover, we knew that we wanted to return to the Mediterranean Sea someday.
The time to return came after our son Thomas was born. A short flight and good conditions for a small child for the first stays together at the sea, that was important to us. And so we discovered the greek island of Rhodes, a wonderful place with a warm, calm and clean sea and beautiful beaches.
The snorkeling on the island of Rhodes was also interesting with a surprisingly large number of fish. However, in general, you see significantly less when snorkeling in the Mediterranean than when scuba diving.
In the Mediterranean Sea, we also restarted our much-loved scuba diving together after a break of several years. The island of Cyprus proved to be perfect for this wonderful scuba diving restart holiday. Even better diving followed, when we headed back to the Greek island of Rhodes for another summer holiday.
European diving sites or those easily accessible by air from Europe are an interesting addition to tropical diving. It should be added that in many places you need to dive deeper, to rock walls, caves, tunnels or wrecks. We enjoyed diving thanks to our previous experience and also because we were already more advanced divers with Advanced (AOWD) licenses. Of course, this is not a necessity, in addition to deeper diving sites it is also possible to dive in shallower water. However, the Mediterranean Sea is one of the good reasons to get an Advanced diving license and also to continue working on yourself and improving during your dives. So, as a more experienced diver, you will enjoy diving much better.
